i think a lot of what we consider "cult classics" are simply well loved classics- not deserving of "cult classic" status (not that i know Exactly what that is... but i don't think all films labeled "cult classic" are worthy of it)

The most recent I've seen and therefore I'm uber excited about is Donnie Darko- some people are completely unimpressed by the movie and others, like me, are in complete awe- it's one of those movies where you connect and want the main character to become your best friend or follow him along the plots of another 32452345 continued movies but you realize there is no comparison to the original and the idea of others like it flail.

uhm, that's me- i'm kandi and i like donnie darko :P

I would have to agree with this statement for the most part.

I think that a "cult" film is a movie that has a dedicated cult statis following. A handfull of people who like, love, or appreciate a movie and doesn't care what the masses think. Like with Donnie Darko, Evil Dead, or Reefer Madness. Just a few examples.

This tribe though allows people to talk about any movie they deem a cult classic and for others to respond and make conversation.

            Hope you enjoy.

A cult classic to me is a film that didn't make a splash in the theaters..was generally ignored or reviled by 70-90% of the critics and movie goers alike.

But then something happens and years later you find that that same film is now suddenly considered a misunderstood piece of gold by many of the original folks who hated it or just didn't get it the first time. These films still don't neccessarily become rental hits or anything but they still have become something much more respected after time.

Films that fit that definition to me are, in no particular order,
              Buckaroo Banzai
              Big Trouble In Little China
Bringing Up Baby(A Katherine Hepburn/Cary Grant film that was declared a disaster when it was released and help to make Kate box office poison by many but is now considered one of her most loved films.)
              Repo Man
              Rocky Horror Picture Show
              Hairspray
              Strictly Ballroom

And there are those newer films that are now becoming cult classics or soon will from what I have seen.
              Moulin Rouge
Phantom of the Opera(the ALW one that came out this winter)
              National Treasure
              Donnie Darko

There are many more but, hey, I ony have so much time!

                Nice definition, Cybele!

Sometimes a cult classic can also be something "discovered" by a subculture because it's amusing or fascinating or just mesmerizingly odd: e.g. Reefer Madness, Petey Wheatstraw, just about anything by Ed Wood.

Blade Runner fits solidly with your definition of a cult classic--ignored or panned by critics and audiences on first release, now found Highly Significant. Same with Citizen Kane (universally trashed on first release), Repo Man, the remake of Dr. Caligari or anything by John Waters. Then there's zeitgeist kinds of movies that get lots of midnight showings: Harold and Maude for instance, or Hollywood movies meant to be schlocky but have enough textual richness that critics like to read them: Blade Runner again, or all of the Alien and Terminator movies.

Hi folks just found this tribe and glad I did as I love cult films.

I liked ScrapIron defintion of a cult movie, well said.

I could sit here and easily list a hundred cult films that I love. I am a film junkie and most the films that I like are not mainstream blockbusters. Of course there are exceptations. I divided some of favorite cult films down to directors/producers because I think that there are certain directors that constantly put out instant cult classics. So my list of directors/producers are as follows: David Lynch, Terry Gilliam, John Waters, Danny Boyle and Tim Burton. I havent seen every film by all of these masters and there are a few films that a few of these greats have done that I wouldnt necessarily consider cult classics but by and large I think these guys are masters.

If I had to narrow it down for one film per director it would be as follows. David Lynch: Twin Peaks: Fire walk with me. Terry Gilliam: 12 Monkeys John Waters: Hairspray Danny Boyle: 28 Days Later Tim Burton: Nightmare before Christmas

A quick list of my other faves: Donnie Darko, Shawn of the Dead, Heathers, Wild Palms, Taxi Driver, Blade Runner, Ginger Snaps and Harold and Maude.

I'm not sure what genre makes the best cult classic. As you see I love a wide variety of cult films from dark comedies (Heathers, Harold and Maude) to cyberpunk/futuristic sci fi ( Wild Palms, Blade Runner) and some of these movies have more than one or two genres mixed in. For me I like certain characteristics like wit, dark humour, grit, sarcasm, futuristic, cyber-punk, sci-fi, horror, twisted, surreallness, exposing the underbelly of society etc....

My ultimate classic cult film would probably be Wild Palms. I love everything about it including the fact it didnt start off as a film it was a t.v. serial. It has all of the characteristics I listed above plus its political and has a great soundtrack.

Again so glad I found this tribe.

      Cheers,

      Bowen

Anything by David Lynch....The first film that enters my mind when I think 'cult classic' is 'Eraserhead'.
Others I love (non Lynch related):
        Letter to Brezhnev
        Freaks
        Two Lane Blacktop
        Heavy Metal
        Times Square
        Frankenstein Conquers the World
The Man Who Fell to Earth
        Halloween
        The Boy With Green Hair
        Backbeat
        Quadrophenia
        Dogs in Space
        Harold and Maude

        .......and oh so many more...

Harold & Maude is my favorite film of all time, and also a cult classic, panned by the critics in its day. Saw it in the theater when it first came out, and recognized all of the location spots (SF Native here), including the cenetery where my sister & other kin are buried.

Knew Collin Higgins'(H&M writer) cousin, and got some background insights about the film, and also knew one of the creators of the mini-hearse that Harold drove. Made it more special somehow. SO many quotable lines, which also helps define a cult movie classic.

Since movies tend to cost a great deal to make, they're usually designed as mass entertainments of some kind or other. A cult movie is one that failed on the "mass" obligation to investors, but picks up a devoted following that love the hell out of it for reasons of their own. Well-known examples are "Waterworld," "Harold & Maude," "Heaven's Gate" and "Rocky Horror."

Another type of cult movie encompasses the personal just-for-the-hell-of-it statements by (semi) mainstream directors like "1941," "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia," "Performance," "Ed Wood," "The Bed-Sitting Room" and "Shock Corridor.'

Then there all the Unclassifiables like "Plan 9," "Candy," "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World," and many, many more too weird not to love.

I consider a movie a cult film if it's mostly ignored by the public but embraced by the Wild Eyed Frothing Film Lover's Brigade.

My favorite by far is Greaser's Palace, but Robert Downey's pa made another doozy in Putney Swope. I really love John Waters' early ones, Female Trouble especially.

I think satire is my favorite, but noir follows fast behind.

In my humble opinion, the ultimate is
FREAKS by Tod Browning because it has it all:
Scares (King Whatisname the human caterpilar and the pinheads in the rain with knives: they're like the Manson chicks! Do you spose this movie was the inspiration for the creepy crawl?

Romance! The eternal triangle: lovesick rich midget er little person, gold digging horse faced trapeze artist, lovesick strongman!

Drama! Will Olga's poison be found in time!?

laughs! That crazy stuttering human skeleton!

So I'm nominating it as Cult Movie For Eternity.

There are no cult films anymore. Cult films were cult back before DVD and VHS and even cable--back when a movie would come out and vanish from theaters with only a handful of people having seen it. They'd talk and talk about this movie--it would have a "cult" following as actually getting to view the film was so rare.

Today I can find Lucio Fulci movies that you had to buy $100 5th generation bootleg tapes of in the '80s at Best Buy on perfectly transfered DVDs for $9.99. The cult era (as we knew it) is over.

Not sure that it's a bad thing--but today everything is called cult when it really isn't.

I understand where you are coming from - I remember when I was a lad, films like Shocking Asia or Clockwork Orange were banned in Australia, so as a teenager we would flock to the house of some lucky bastard who had been overseas and managed to dig up a bootleg...

However, I think the definition of Cult Movie needs to adapt, the same way everything about media has adapted to suit the times we live in. These days, 2000 films a year are available from KMart, as you say.... but the Cult film is still the one that disappeared from the theatre unjustly... and then is re-born on DVD after a whisper campaign convinces the connissuer that they _have_ to see this movie...
